Foam Rollers

Foam rollers are one of the early 21st-century's most popular fitness home equipment tools. First made out of poly styrene they are compact, light, and relatively simple to learn how to operate. They are considered to be one of the safest items to be used at home to improve the condition of tight muscles and connective tissue. These items can be purchased online and in retail stores, and also available for use at most health clubs around the United States. Now in later generations they offer a wider shape, size, and variety is for a number of different purposes they can be used for including muscle growth and toning. Prices range anywhere from $12 to upwards of almost $100 depending on the materials and intended use of the product. So when is it appropriate to use these items and what applications could they possibly be used to benefit you?

Foam rollers were intended to help loosen up tight muscle tissue typically caused by muscle strengthening or injury related tightness. One of the greatest benefits is not only does it at the same time help relax tight muscle tissue but it also has a possible positive impact on the connective tissue. If you think of all of the organs and muscles and other tissues in the body they have connected tissue surrounding them in this way the body can certain aspects of our anatomy. A great example to illustrate what connective tissue is comes from looking at the inside of an orange. When you peel off the outer layer of an orange you'll see that it's an equal segments will segments are divided by white appearing tissue this is very similar to the connective tissue in the human body and its function. Another more accurate illustration would be when you're eating beef or chicken and you open up parts of the leg or other areas of the body and see a semi clear substance dividing up a large segments of tissue. One of foam rollers apply to the tissue it tends to stretch it because muscle growth at a faster rate than the connective tissue often times when the compartment is filled it causes strain on other areas of the body nearby.


For those of you with a little bit more advanced knowledge think of it in your quadricep muscles. Your Quadricep muscles are attached to the longest bone in the human body the Femur. This part of the body well of course by default have the largest muscles in the body. When we look at the Quadricep muscle group you'll see that there composed of several very large muscles overlapping each other in a particular order for the most part they are completely symmetrical and tell you get to the outside of the leg. These muscles will oftentimes stick together we often times will feel it as a great deal of pain runners and translates know pain very well. Given the shape of the Femur and the shape of the muscle tissue laying on top of a semi completely hard surface will allow the ball to act as a backboard allowing you to apply pressure to the dividing areas in between these muscles pulling the connective tissue apart like Velcro on the shoe. Each muscle in the body and organ is designed to move independently of its neighbor when they do not have enough lubrication between them for the factual tissue is called a very tight by growing muscle tissue they can become attached and stuff together much like Velcro. A foam roller is made to help support this tissue well reducing the stress of the muscles this could be a vital importance to people choose to exercise regularly thus the need for the foam roller.

Some of you maybe asking what is the biggest problem with the foam roller itself? Foam rollers have a nasty reputation for being painful when first starting to begin with and with any other exercise for exercise equipment sometimes extreme pain at the beginning is necessary. However, in the case of foam rollers this happens far too often and thus many people purchase them but do not use him for any length of time. I myself and useful rollers in the past and they can be extremely painful when the tissue is very tight however one of the best ways to release the pain is to work through the pain tell the tissue can start to soften up this can take weeks of continuous application. As part of my specialization within the massage feel I have looked over various methods of releasing connective tissue putting using foam rollers. I've chosen to go about releasing this tissue slightly different fashion one that most people find much more comfortable and enjoyable. By the use of Medi-Cupping technology I can release the tissue and pull it apart and allow the muscle fibers to relax within the body without the use of inward force pushing on the body but pulling the tissue to separate it. I Invite people to consider the use of cupping as part of their workout and stretching regiment as a way to separate tissue in a virtually pain-free fashion. One of the most important things to remember about any work over team stretching exercise is that you do at a concert with training medical professionals sure that you have a safe and injury free workout in activity session. NRT Experience PART TWO (Nutritional Response Testing)

So for some of you who have read my previous blog post on nutritional response testing this will be a great update for those of you that haven't please go back and read the previous blog posting first. I'm writing this blog post in the spring of 2015 which is approximately three years after my first NRT experience. I felted it valuable to update people about some long-term lessons I'm learning about this topic from my own personal experiences. 

In late March 2015 I experienced as of this moment my only grand mal seizure. From what I was told later it was a fairly intense seizure on the continuum of seizure severity. I lost part of my memory temporarily, my ability to speak read, and write words cohesively was  greatly diminished as well for almost a full month. I was very fortunate to have family right there by me at the time and a spouse who had experience with epilepsy (with a sibling). After an ambulance ride and a half-day in the emergency department it was determined that the most likely cause of this grand maul seizure was exhaustion.

Without going too much into my personal affairs I had been under a significant amount of physical and emotional stress for the past year in my personal life as well as professionally. Other side effects of the seizure included extreme muscle tension which pulled my spine out of alignment and some of my major joints and also started to dislocate. As I stated prior my ability to speak to read into rate as well as my memory was greatly affected in the beginning and slowly got better over time. I must admit I feel extremely lucky considering the circumstances. After the experience I decided to contact my NRT practitioners for help. It was determined I did not have a tumor I did not have a serious drug problem and many of the other traditional risk factors for seizures have been eliminated however I did not feel that drugs and being sent home was a sufficient enough answer beyond that. I contacted my NRT practitioners and they were able to get me in a very short period of time to do at least an analysis using their method.

As stated in the previous blog post on this topic they found a significant build up of heavy metals in my body. My liver, spleen, and other major organs use for filtration and hormone production have been greatly impaired by these metals. I had stopped doing  NRT therapy for sometime and have felt very good but my increase in long-term stress for the last year and sniff they can be worn my body down far more than I had realized. I admit however that I did not realize the extent to which my body has worn down a matter fact because the stress and recently ended I had rested for a few weeks and then started to work out which my body was not ready for and I believe to be the triggering event to cause a seizure.

After taking a personal mental inventory of what I have been through and that I had once again overwhelmed my body beyond what it was capable of I made a decision to follow the guidelines of the neurologist another doctors and my NRT practitioners. For weeks I took time off and reduce my workload getting more sleep and following my body's feelings rather than my desires for things like food sleep and exercise. As of the writing of this particular blog post I have been on an RT treatment now for a week and a half and I must admit that I feel significantly better I can measure how much better I feel and accompanied with some acupuncture work while I continue to rest has made a substantial difference in my mental clarity and very slowly some of my physical aftereffects.

My hope is to be able to increase my activity level and begin to resume a less stressful but yet productive workload in another month. As a practitioner has once again reminded me that health is a continueum that it is ever changing and that your priorities must reflect your focus on your health and other goals in your life. It also reminds me of the greatest challenge people have to their health in this modern age and I believe that his commitment and financing both play equal parts and her inability to stay healthy. It has cost me today again look at my policies and my prices to make sure that I can offer people a very good service at a fair price. I anticipate Jerry my follow up appointments with my NRT practitioners that they will continue to use Whole Foods supplements to help me get stronger more focused and back to what I was at after my first blog post experience.

I sincerely hope if there is anyone on the fence about their health and any respect or have a concern in any respect that they take the time to take the advice of their healthcare practitioner seriously and to always get second opinions about anything there practitioners told them to make sure they are getting the most accurate and up-to-date consistent information possible. They were always be people wanting a deal and I completely understand that concern however prioritizing your health and your commitment to your health may mean giving up things that you would like to have and for me this year will be my vacation add rather spend that money on getting myself back to where I need to be for the future and not just one week a year. 

And I would like to say thank you at the end of this post to all of my clients who were and continue to be very encouraging and accommodating during this recent difficult event for me who have stood by me and I as always feel incredibly grateful for their business and their kindness. I also think it is also with noting that it's a huge reminder to me again for how much of a miracle to human body is when you give it what it needs it can repair itself in a remarkable fashion but we must feed our bodies what they so desire.

Tennis Ball

Throughout my career in massage therapy and bodywork I have gotten questions about “at home care” devices in general terms and for particular conditions. I think like anything else people in general, should trust their instincts but consulting a professional (or even a number of them) is always a good idea (just like every other profession there are a few good ones and a lot of bad ones). One product, the tennis ball by a wide margin one that I get a lot of questions about so I thought it might be a good idea to share some general insight. 


To help loosen sore spots in the arms, shoulders, and legs this device makes some sense to use: 1. A tennis ball can create push back with as much force as is generally used by a massage therapist if they were going to work on many areas of the body with. 2. Tennis balls cannot create a sharp edge unlike other object people try to “push” into a painful spot. 3. Tennis balls are cheap and easy to find. 4. While traveling they are small, compact, and are TSA ok! There is one drawback…your pets may try to make them into one of their toys.  


By the time most people have brought up using them on themselves they already have tried several times before they ask if they are doing it right. So instead of saying please don’t I will say here are a few general principals you can you to decide where it is ok to use the tennis balls for tight spots: 


When working the back:

  1. Do not lay on top of them. Instead, bend at the knee with your feet should width apart and lean back into a wall with the tennis ball placed in the area of pain.
  2. The key to releasing anything is time. Hum your favorite song at least twice before moving on UNLESS the pain level increases or a sharp pain results.
  3. If you have any spinal curvatures ask your chiropractor first to prevent disc dislocation
  4. If you have weak bones don’t try please
  5. Never place a ball directly over the spine 


 When Working the Shoulders: 

  1. Don’t jam a ball into the side of your neck
  2. If you start to feel pain or numbing in the hands or arms when you place a ball in your Deltoid you are most likely pushing on a nerve or blood vessel so stop it.
  3. If you want to move the ball around slowly just bend down lower or stand more upright against the wall the ball will move (this is useful around your shoulder blades).


When Working the Hips:

This can feel good after sitting for extend periods of time so travelers pay special attention!

  1. Stand perpendicular to the wall and rest tennis ball along the edge of your hip socket and gently lean in ( if this is not physically possible you can place the ball in a door jam and the frame of the doorway). This can release pressure on the hips which when tight can make it harder to walk or to get up from sitting down. 
  2. For some sciatic nerve pains you can place a ball in the middle of the gluts on each side of the spine to prevent pain and numbing in the legs. 
  3. If the pain is in the small of your back try finding the top of your hip and placing the ball near the spine on each side but not over it (again ask a chiropractor before doing if its ok for you).


When working just above the knee and the bottoms of your feet:

  1. Some people love working on their I.T. bands but hate using foam rollers because of the pain. You can work them by again going into a door jam and placing the ball anywhere along the I.T. Band. 
  2. For those dealing with plantar fasciitis sometimes the rolling the foot over the bottom of the feet can feel very good. There are many remedies for working with the condition this is not a full proof plan but it can help most people deal with the pain.


Finally, I deal in the reality of your health not my exceptions so please if you are unsure ask a medical practitioner you trust to help you decide if a form of at home therapy is right for you or not. But like I said: most people don’t ask unless they have already tried it so I don’t talk down or preach to anyone…rather you ask and be honest then to hurt yourself and regret it.
